ConocoPhillips Canada has a new opportunity for a Drilling Engineer to be a part of the success of our Surmont Oilsands Drilling program. The successful Drilling Engineer will responsible for providing SAGD engineering support primarily to the multi-year Surmont SAGD drilling projects. The selected Drilling Engineer will report to the SAGD Drilling Engineering Team Lead, this position is located in Calgary, Alberta                                         
 
Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate safety leadership by personal example and in all aspects of the work planning and execution.
  • Provide complete and thorough SAGD drilling research to identify in advance, any potential drilling problems and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Provide complete and thorough SAGD well design.  The well design will include the following parameters:
    • Casing design to comply with all regulatory requirements and to meet all anticipated well conditions
    • Directional drilling design to provide optimum well placement, conforming to the broader reservoir development plan
    • Drilling fluids design with optimized properties to drill the well safely and efficiently. Provide for any environmental considerations caused by the use of a complex mud system
    • Drill bit and hydraulics design including the use of mud motors. Optimized design will be based on local area geology and rock mechanics information
    • Cement design including provision for efficient zone isolation and mud removal
    • Safety control design, identify potential hazards and engineer controls to protect people
    • Drill String design
  • Provide complete well programs and work packages in a timely manner
  • Assist the Drilling Superintendents and  Senior Drilling Engineer with logistics and SIMOPS planning as required
  • Provide daily monitoring of SAGD drilling working as a team with the project Drilling Superintendents and Rig Supervisors to efficiently execute and continuously improve  the Surmont SAGD well program
  • Provide engineering support to solve and learn from any unforeseen drilling problems
  • Review well site reports for errors and make corrections daily in the WellView drilling database to ensure complete and accurate documentation of drilling operations.
  • Provide onsite engineering support as needed to understand any operational issues first hand
  • Provide back up for Project Drilling Superintendent and Rig Supervisor's as needed
  • Provide project management and be a leader in communications with all stakeholders, including asset team members, drilling administration, drilling superintendent, rig supervisor and completions personnel
  • Provide actual vs. budget reviews for the SAGD program periodically to ensure operational costs are understood and optimized
  • Review and authorize payment for SAGD well construction related invoices
  • Leverage vendors to identify new processes and new technology that may lead to improve drilling efficiency or cost savings
  • Provide technical support for the project procurement and contracting efforts  Assist in the preparation of bid tender documents as needed for the complete range of drilling equipment and services for the multiyear Surmont SAGD drilling program
  • Assist in subsequent bid evaluations and recommendations as well as contract compliance monitoring
  • Prepare and present operations updates to management as required
  • Attend training sessions to keep skills and required certifications current
  • Share learned knowledge (good or bad) and conduct informational lessons learned sessions
  • Establish and maintain industry contacts and enrolment 
** NOTE: This position is based in Calgary with up to 10% travel to the field**
** Strong preference will be given to local candidates **

Desired Skills & Experience

Basic/Required Qualifications
  • Minimum Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years related industry experience
  • Proficient in Wellview and Landmark drilling engineering software.
  • Familiar with SAP
  • Proficient in MS Office programs (Outlook, Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada on a regular full-time basis without restrictions 
Critical Skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment within the drilling group and with other technical disciplines
  • Pragmatic, grounded and rounded
  • Strong preference for candidates with experience in Canadian Oil Sands and SAGD
  • Previous enhanced recovery drilling engineering/operations experience
