Job Description

Currently, we have a Structural Design Specialist opportunity open in the US Gulf of Mexico within the BP Wells Organization. Being part of the Completions Excellence Team, this position will provide specialist technical support to BP operations in tubular design, upper completions and wellheads.

Tubular design involves the design of the tubular strings fundamental to drilling and wellbore construction—drill pipe, casing and tubing. Upper completions (e.g., tubing, packers, safety valves, control lines, gas lift mandrels, chemical injection mandrels, gauges) and wellheads are critical parts of well construction and ensure efficient hydrocarbon production or water injection for the life of the well. A high level of technology expertise is demanded by high well costs, high well rates (10-50 thousand barrels of oil per day), extreme environments (+5000 ft sea depth, +30,000 ft subsea, +20,000 psi, +400F), and increased reliability (+10 years).

BP employs several world class experts in the Global Wells Organization focused on all aspects of well construction, of which tubular design, upper completions and wellheads are subsets. Key areas of focus are:
• Casing and tubing design,
• Upper completions component design,
• Wellhead design,
• Equipment specifications and selection criteria,
• Installation and maintenance of recommended practices.

Success at BP is dependent on our ability to leverage the collective efforts of some of the worlds most experienced technical completion experts. The successful candidate will work closely with the tubular technology team in the Global Wells Organization. In this role, the candidate will be immediately involved in supporting well construction operations.

Key accountabilities

Key responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
• Support GOM Wells in complying with tubular design requirements through intimate personal knowledge of BP and industry design standards, training of GOM Wells Engineering staff related to tubular design, and maintenance of compliance records for GOM Wells tubular designs
• Review tubular design integrity performed by business unit engineers including reviews of the structural integrity for both the tube body and connection under burst, collapse, tension, torsion and combined loadings.
• Support development of casing and tubing designs under load cases not considered standard or routine, including but not limited to annular pressure build-up (APB). In many cases this may require the modeling of complex physical phenomenon, including thermal modeling of multi-phase flow with BP-approved software packages.
• Serve as the primary link between the Global Wells Organization Tubular Technology team and GOM Wells
• Serve as primary link on technical matters between drilling and completions disciplines.
• Define scopes of work for third party engineering studies and select and monitor contractors.
• Serve as expert user of casing and tubular design software, including WellCat, StressCheck, and Abaqus.
• Participate in the definition of software enhancements and periodic assurance of software updates.
• Maintain a leading edge awareness of developments which may affect tubular and upper completion design in the future or the integrity of well equipment currently in service.

Essential Education

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics or a closely related field.

Essential experience and job requirements

• Minimum of 10 years relevant work experience.
• Industry experience in tubular design (casing design, upper completion design, equipment design & specification).
• Knowledge of drilling and completions methodology will also be an advantage.

Desirable criteria & qualifications

To be considered for this position applicants must have strong fundamental technical and core competencies including:

Technical Competencies
• Skillful understand of:
- Solid mechanics and mechanical-structural design principles,
- Integrated mechanical and structural design applications including analysis of multi-component systems,
- Standard and advanced design materials,
- Impact of heat transfer and material science on equipment design,
- Interaction of mechanical systems and materials with fluid flow,
- Applications for structural analysis including finite element and advanced modeling of complex problems (preferred but not required).
• Intimacy with tubular design software, (WellCat and StressCheck).

Core Competencies
• Demonstrates knowledge of the fundamentals of the mechanical engineering discipline, including the ability to solve problems independently.
• Promotes open and effective communication, both written and oral.
• Demonstrates ability for innovative and original thinking.
• Focuses efforts and prioritizes work to deliver business value.
• Overcomes obstacles and barriers to ensure timely delivery of project work.
• Adapts approach to achieve outstanding results.
• Actively engages and respects the diverse contributions of the team, business unit contacts, technical networks and service sector.
• Clarifies the key issues in complex and ambiguous situations.
• Analyzes large data sets derived from laboratory and field projects and makes recommendations to progress the work to successful completion.
